Paipo graveyard!

While I'm recovering from my broken collar-bone, I've been rummaging around in the shed and I came across these two beauties! The one on the left was originally 6'2 and shaped for Jarrah Lynch, son of Victorian surfing legend Wayne Lynch. This afternoon I cut it down to 5,8, turning it into a prone weapon! The other one is more like 4'10 by about 14 inches wide. They are both slightly under 3/4 of an inch thick.

The little one is the best tube riding alaia I've ever built, while the longer one is quite wide (about 18 inches) and is super fast and exceptionally good for long steep sections.

I dragged them both out and gave them a fresh coat of oil, with the hope of getting them wet in some small clean waves tomorrow morning!

Flex Paipo Ride report!

I got to test the flex paipo in the exact type of surf I designed it for. It was super clean 3-4ft, not all that hollow, but nice big walls. The board performed brilliantly! Being big and wide, I expected it to be fast, but it was DAMN fast!

The really surprising thing was just how much the flex worked. I found that I could hang it deep and high, almost tucking myself under the crumbling lip. It never felt like letting go or sideslipping as long as I held that outer rail up. As I shot through the section I found that releasing the rail, and allowing the board to flatten back out, would cause it to almost slingshot out onto the shoulder.

The other unexpected thing was how well the flex would allow the board to cutback. It would bite and carve into a deep rail turn, and I could feel the bottom of the board bending across the tail.

On my flip-nose paipo, I found that the flexiness of the board would sometimes make it almost wobble and stall in bumpy high speed conditions. The rib around this board made it fairly stiff front to back, but with a nice lateral flex across the back end. It was flexy enough to help on take-offs, but never once had that spongy slow stalling feel.

I'm really happy with this board, and surprised how well such a simple design could work! This wouldn't be my chosen board in steep hollow conditions, as the keel-fin spoon board performs flawlessly in those types of waves. But when its mid to big, and a bit fat and slow, this board is the bomb!

More fun on the Hull!

These pics aren't from today, but the conditions were similar when I snuck away from work early this morning. In all honesty, I think this might be the most fun board I've ever ridden! It catches waves like my 9'4 log, yet its only 7'2. It trims as fast as my mini-simmons, and turns beautifully! It has a very smooth feel to it, like nothing I've ever ridden. It seems to encourage me to relax, draw out those turns, lean into those cutbacks, and cruise along at warp speeds!

I finally got to bust out the famous wooden-spoon/simmons/twin-keel paipo board in some decent sized clean waves yesterday! I had been concerned that the fins were still a bit too big, but it turns out that they're just right! I surfed a short, fast and hollow lefthander, and I found that the hull bottom just mowed down any chop on the water surface. It didn't feel like it was pushing water, or creating any drag, but the displacement principle was clear to see and feel. The wake left behind this board is flat and smooth. The fins worked so well that I started stalling to see how high I could climb into the vertical part of the face before I'd break out of trim. Well, I just couldn't get this thing to break loose! I think the only limit to how deep and high this board will ride is going to ride will be the courage of the guy riding it!. It was very fast when I pulled myself up into my favourite "Superman" or forward trim position, but I had only to slide back a few inches and it turned on a dime. The fins combined with the rolled hull-bottom made for effortless rail to rail turns, and it held in brilliantly on cut-backs. Hopefully I can coax my wife down this weekend so we can shoot some video footage!

Junior decided that today was the day he'd stand up on his first wave. After scrambling to his knees a couple of times, he suddenly popped to his feet! Not bad for a five year-old! I wish I could still catch 6-inch unbroken waves all the way to the beach!!!!

I saw Iron Maiden live in Melbourne last night. I've seen quite a few great bands in my time, but I have to say....Maiden kicked ass!!!!! These are guys who must be in their late 50's and they jumped around like maniacs for nearly three hours! Anyway, I have been busy making boards as usual, and here are three new English-style belly-boards.

Mini-Simmons and Single-Fin!

Here's a couple of rippers shaped by fellow SCAB Jason. The black beauty is a 5'6 Mini-Simmons. It has a subtle hull nose, and a wicked deep double concave to V in the back. Topped off with the Bat-tail and the hand-made white keels, this thing has stealth written all over it!

The Orange Wonder is a 5'10 Single fin with a diamond-tail. It is an authentic 70's style board, with some subtle modern teaks in the rails and bottom contours. I can't say any more than that without violating my Gag-order!

Right, so I finally got these little suckers out in some cleanish 2-3ft surf over the weekend, and they are FUN!!!! The wind was light onshore, so I didn't have any barrel-time, but I did get to test them out in some nice steep walls and I discovered something very interesting. They give you a wicked burst of speed when paddling for a wave, and you can use your free hand to get you over flat sections too.

But thats not the best part! I also found that, as well as working with one or both hands out front, you can also get a nice high line by having your inside arm out front, and the other one stretched back, with the planing surface next to or even under your leg. As I type this I realise how hard this might be to visualise, but trust me, once I did it by mistake, I realised how functional it was! This allowed my to climb and fall on the face by just tweaking the angle of the planes, with my body relaxed and following the natural movement of the water. It was very cool, and I'm hoping for some clean conditions where I might be able to get some underwater shots which will illustrate the idea!

This week the Boarder clan are packing up and moving house....to a sweet little 5 acre block, with its own little eucalypt forest (hello bmx track), a large veggie garden and more space to play than ever. But the jewel in the crown of our new homestead is that its a few hundred metres from the turn-off to my favourite little point-break of all time! I'm not totally sure, but I might now be living closer to my dear Point Impossible than any other surfer on earth! I've said it before, and I'll say it again, JOOOOOYYYY!!!!!!

I decided to try a mini-handplane for each hand, for the beach breaks I sometimes bodysurf. These can be nice and hollow, but a bit unpredictable. I like to have the plane on my hand which is on the wave side of my body. Most of my friends have a preferred hand which they use no matter which way they go. I'm a "switch-hander" and I'm often left fumbling to get the plane onto the correct hand in time to make the take-off. Although these are quite small, they'll hold in a steep face nicely, and when I'm in trim, I can put both arms forward and, when combined, they'll have more surface area than most single handplanes do. (Ride report following when conditions provide!)

Paulownia Paipo Magic!

This one is a spoon-nose paulownia Paipo, with a pine tail-block to stiffen it up a bit. The paulownia is nice and light, but tends to split once its over 18' wide. To deal with the water-sucking ability of the pine, this one will be sealed with a few coats of the faithful urethane!!!!

I love off-cuts. I leave them in a pile near the back-door, and when I have an idea, I grab a pencil and a tape-measure, and out I go!!!! This Little gem has a subtle hull nose, and a nice little concave out the back. I've stained the wood to make it a bit darker, and now it just needs to be sealed!

I made one of these last spring, and I was amazed at how well it worked. This one is 26 inches long by 16 wide. It has a slight roll through the bottom and hard rails all round. It's like a mini-paipo, or a big handplane. I've heard them referred to as cubit (forearm) boards. They are great for bodysurfing in steep hollow waves. You can take off much deeper, and still have a lot more speed than with a normal handplane. You can also bottom turn and cutback like a paipo board!

After reading an interview with Winki and Bells pioneer Bryan Hayden, I decided to tackle building and riding a board like his. Here it is with the fins just glued in. This afternoon I'll foil them, and then it'll be time to put the handles on. I'm going to put two handles on this one since I won't be riding it exclusively on right hand point breaks. After seeing Soulglider's cool paipos, I decided to make another pick-style paipo, but without bending or spooning the nose. I suspect, after building and riding a few of these, that in most conditions, the rockered or spooned nose doesn't have a huge effect on how these boards ride. The narrower ones definitely hold a higher line with the spooned nose, but the wider, flatter paipos seem to pearl just as easily with a rockered nose as with a flat one. Having said that, the HPD shape is the only one I haven't tried with a completely flat nose. So here goes!

I was digging through the catalogue of an online used-book store when I stumbled upon a copy of Lindsay Lord's "Naval Architecture of Planing Hulls". I can't make top or tail of most of it, as it really is about boat building. There is one little bit about width/length aspect ratios which made a bit of sense. I promptly went outside and hacked out a little paulownia paipo, observing the 0.4 aspect ratio found by Lord to be optimal for planing in his experiments. I'm guessing that it'll ride like any other 37 inch piece of wood, but I'm quite proud of myself for maybe figuring out a page or two of engineering speak!

I got the spoon wet this morning in nice clean 3 foot waves. The tail , rail and fin combination works exactly as I had hoped. It holds a beautiful line, tight and high in the pocket. It has just enough flex to help on the take off, and it turns quite well. The fins were definitely too big, but it was helpful to feel how they affected the ride. Compared to the finless paipo's the drag was very noticeable. The take-off acceleration was good, but I got caught out trying to make sections which I could motor through on the Ho'okano paipo. This afternoon I cut the fins down to my #2 template, and added a bit of foil on the insides. I don't want to lose the great bite and hold of the keels, but I'm seriously addicted to the speed of the flat bottom boards! I think this finned design will be my go-to for hollower conditions.

Here she is after my best effort at a GG homage paint-job. It looks ok, but board-building for me is a constant battle between my desire to get things right, and my instinct to be done with it asap! A couple of coats of urethane, and we'll be hitting the waves. Watch this space for a ride report, and maybe even some video footage!

Wooden spoon, progress report!

Today I sanded out the hull and spoon, and I foiled the fins. I left them thick and big so that I can sand them down after riding it. They're just resting on the board in the pic, the 12mm base will be glued into a groove in the board.

Micro-simmons Greenough twin keel knee board/paipo thingy!

So today I was walking the dog on the beach, and I was physically assaulted by the idea of a paipo/kneeboard which combined the spoon nose of a Velo Kneeboard, with the Hull-bottom and twin keel fins of a Mini-Simmons. It seems like it might be a very versatile and functional design. So far I've glued the rails on, cut out the template for the fins, and worked out the fin placement. Watch this space, I should have the spoon ground out and the fins in place by tomorrow!
